HTTP and HTML first started life in late 1991 when Tim Berners-Lee, a worker at CERN, decided to release a specification that would radically transform global communication. The purpose of this specification was to unify all institutions into using one specification, rather than each having an internal specification which could not be used natively anywhere else. The first version of HTML, consisting of 20 tags, was broadly based on CERN's internal SGMLguid SGML based protocol, to which all but the link tag were specified. Although the project was never officially adoped by CERN it soon became the most popular medium for sharing data. Despite the HTML now being developed into a modern specification, with the HTML 5 draft specification being implemented in many of the most widely used browsers, the HTTP protocol has remained untouched.
